After researching every egg cooker on Amazon, this Oroton egg cooker checked nearly all the boxes for me. I believe in buying good tools, so I usually do my homework in finding the best for me Рmy useage and budget. On the Pro side of things:• All stainless steel interior, rack and omelet tray (except for the plastic poaching tray РBPA free, they say).• An actual manual timer (not electronic), that I can control myself with a single (loud enough), ding to let me know the cycle is complete.• An indicator light letting me know it’s on or off.• All lightweight components. The cord disconnects from the unit for better storage. • All parts fit inside with the cover in place for easier storage.• Auto shut-off, if the internal tray of water boils away, whether on schedule or not. The manual timer will still proceed if there’s time left, but the unit will be off.• Large capacity Р9 eggs hard boiled! 5 eggs poached. The cons:• The omelet tray is small Рonly one or two eggs max.• The handle on top to open the unit is an odd design, meant to dissipate heat I’m sure, but it does not always inspire stability in your hand when trying to use it. It’s a stiff plastic that may be susceptible to breakage if dropped. It does add to the cuteness factor, though.• The printed text on the unit should be printed in a brighter white color, rather than the off white that it is now. The numbers are difficult to see, especially in the shadows of the kitchen. The pointer on the timer knob does not have a painted line on it either, just an indent.• The feet of the base unit are not rubber. They are a hard foam type material, which does not grip the counter top all that well. The unit will slide around pretty easily. The first time I used the cooker, I placed 3 eggs inside, followed directions in the manual (gave it 12 mins), and they came out nearly perfect. The centers of each yoke were a tiny bit less cooked (photo) than the rest of the yoke Рno biggie. I think15 minutes would have been better. Of course I put them in ice water to arrest the cooking cycle once the bell rang, maybe I could have let them sit just bit before placing them in the cold water. The omelet tray needs to be oiled before placing your eggs inside (unfortunately). I so wanted to be able to simply mix my eggs in the tray, cook and eat. Nope. The tray needs to be oiled (logically), to prevent sticking. I thought I’d try it anyway. The eggs became light and fluffy right at the end of cooking. They rose up, full of air and descended as I lifted the cover off the unit. They too were done perfectly I’d say.The unit consumes 345 watts/2.9 amps according to my Kill-A-Watt meter. It’s only a matter of about 2 minutes before you hear the water boiling. That 345 came down by a couple once the time got below 5 minutes. I think ideally, you should use distilled water with this unit to make cleaning easier, but you don’t have to. Any staining can be removed by using a little vinegar in a little water, then rubbed out.The manual comes with a useful graphic (photo) showing ideal starting times for the various egg styles. The timer works in 5 minute increments, so you’re really “ballparking” the timing anyway. It also provides some tips on making eggs without using the included egg poker, saying that it is not always necessary (soak them 1st) to pierce the tops (large end), in order to achieve great results. I just poke ‘em. One time using their poker, when I pierced the top, the shell cracked. I cooked it anyway and it came out fine. Now I use a push pin Рeasy to hold, thinner needle works great.I originally purchased this for myself, but when I brought it over to my mom’s, she quickly became enamored with it saying, “it even looks cute on the counter”. She raved at how perfect the yokes were, even the whites impressed her. So, I let her keep that one while I ordered a second one for myself.I’m thoroughly satisfied (except for the cons), with this egg cooker. It pretty much looks and performs as I expected. I sure hope it lasts for a long time Рno obvious reason why it shouldn’t.
